It’s the stuff of legends – a road with such history that it’s mentioned in songs, films, and novels. The historic Route 66 cuts through America’s heartland on its way to California; a route that many travelers have taken since the late 1920s. This well-traveled highway runs through many large cities and small towns over its 2,451-mile stretch. One such town is Yukon, OK, a modest destination with friendly people and its own stories to share.
Yukon wasn’t always a simple town outside of Oklahoma City. It began as a Native American territory in 1859 before the government reserved the land as a farming-oriented settlement for Americans migrating west.
Located less than 20 miles to the west of Oklahoma City, Yukon’s small-town charm draws people from the surrounding area to reminisce about simpler times and escape the hustle and bustle of big-city life.
Many historic buildings still stand after all these years in Yukon, such as the Mulvey Mercantile. It has stood since 1904 and once sold farm appliances, hardware, and other goods to local residents. Unfortunately, it fell victim to the Great Depression and went bankrupt in the 1930s.
The well-known Czech Hall opened in 1899 and has hosted Czech dances since 1925. Czech migrants originally used the hall for important social events like weddings and family gatherings. It’s the largest dance hall of its kind in the state and is open to anyone.
The Yukon Mill is another historic building in the city and started as a grain elevator in 1893. Shawnee Mills acquired the mill in 1972 and still produces flour and grain out of the building today. Yukon also has historic farm and railroad museums for residents and visitors to enjoy, as well as yearly events such as the Chisholm Trail Crawfish Festival and Annual Czech Day.
